In August the 2016 expedition led by Amanda visited Itala Foundation School with 27 students and three staff from Overton Grange School, Sutton. During their time in Mkushi the students repainted the outside of the school building in its entirety and completed the building of a toilet block. The team worked incredibly hard and must be commended for coping without running water and yet still completing dirty work without complaining.
During these early expeditions ablutions consisted of long drop toilets and buckets of hand pumped water, from a borehole 250 metres away.
The team were given a tour of the local village and a medical clinic where they witnessed scenes of abject poverty.
It was during this expedition that Amanda was inspired to start what was to become Cameron’s Orphanage Project.
Amanda would like to thank Emma Barraclough and Peter Wood for their support during the 2016 expedition and their ongoing support as they continue to take school groups to Itala.
