Low Income

Lack of employment opportunities in formal jobs mean that most Zambian are employed informally; hence pay and conditions are unregulated.

Wages are very low and many working long hours in unsafe conditions. Typical informal work includes labouring on farms and in factories.

The average salary of a government teacher is £250-£400 per month, a policeman will earn £200 per month and a self-employed tailor about £100 per month. There is no tax on incomes below £250/month, and a typical teacher would pay £17 per month in taxes.

The job market in Zambia

There are insufficient formal job-opportunities to meet the employment needs of a young and fast-growing population. These jobs are highly over-subscribed, for example graduates in nursing and teaching can wait several years after qualifying before being placed in a job.

Housing costs

Typical rent for a small house is £20 per month and food and other living costs would total around £100 per month for a typical family. It is easy to see how most Zambians in informal jobs are living in poverty.

There is no government support for people on low income, but the elderly and disabled can receive small handouts.
