Adult Expedition July 2025
The adult expedition July 2025 set off on 29th June 2025 from Gatwick Airport to visit Cameron’s Orphanage in Mkushi, Zambia.
The team consisted of, trustees, sponsors and friends of Cam’s orphanage, Amanda, James, Ann, Connie, Edward, Myles, Sam, Ellie, Isla, Holly and Louise. Some where visiting for the first time, others had been before, and for Connie this was her fourth visit.
We arrived in Mkushi on the 1st of July after 14 hours of flying from Gatwick to Lusaka via Dubai and an overnights stay at the Ibis Gardens 86 km north of Lusaka.
Another very successful trip with everyone turning their hand to something new, whether that was bricklaying, labouring, plastering, carpentry, painting, cooking, teaching, entertaining or partying with the orphanage children.
Part of the experience is shopping for food in the local markets and cooking on traditional braziers. Dealing with the challenges of limited electricity and very little available water. Sleeping in traditional mud huts and washing with solar showers. A challenging environment for us, and how the people of Mkushi live everyday.
During the time at the orphanage the team managed to achieve the following:
- Build shelving in the second water tower store
- Repaint the orphanage inside and out
- Build a new guard hut and paint
- Create a new ITC room in Itala Foundation School with 17 laptops generously donated by Hurstpierpoint College, opened by Dominic Mott headmaster of Hurstpierpoint College
- Build new shelving in Itala Foundation school storerooms
- Visit the farm and see our brick production
- Teach lessons in the school
- Paint a new sign outside the orphanage
- Play with and enjoy the company of the children as well as learn traditional cooking from the Mamas.
- Playing netball against the local team!
- Teach the teachers how to use a sewing machine on four machines donated by sponsors and friends of Cameron’s Orphanage Project
